SKY revenues last year were over £7 billion and they have no home made content worth anything. They rely on Sport ( they have just paid £5billion for Premier League coverage ) and imported American shows.

If people paid a subscription for the BBC and got their content on demand, I am sure they would be able to compete with SKY which is VERY expensive.

Whilst some US shows are good, the majority are average and do not reflect UK
