antihistamine cream, tablets if you have loads of bites, an anti itch cream with crotamiton in.

ok thanks for that
Avon Skin So Soft bath oil or body spray.
Fenistil great for after the little buccers have had a go at you.

I have always purchased this abroad so not sure if it is available in UK.
Skin so soft is supposed to stop them biting as long as you apply it before you go out
....but it has to be the bluey/green one. Not the pink one.
Tilly - yes I should have said that :-)
I'm guessing you've tried deet products and they haven't deterred the bites? I'd agree with woofgang, Afterbite is also quite a good remedy although it stings at first. Sand fly bites can be minimised by not lying directly on the sand but use a sunbed instead. Keep covered or indoors at dawn and dusk too.
Take vitamin B complex for 14 days prior to your departure and for the duration of your stay.

I've found this stuff works but I've never seen it outside Australia; it might prove a bit expensive to order

Fenistil is available on amazon, there is also an oral preparation (Fenistil drops) but they are marketed as sedative.
Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
The best stuff I've ever used (I have, in the past, needed medical treatment on holiday for bites) is boots own brand tropical strength (in a grey bottle). Since I've been using it I've hardly been bitten at all and I've recommended it to loads of people who have said the same. It's a bit more expensive than the regular stuff in the yellow bottle, but it's worth every penny. I have tried every single thing available, to no avail. But this stuff works for me so if you haven't tried it, it might be worth a go.
NoM is right - take Benerva 100mg tablets before and during the holiday - works well.
We took an Avon product, some bath spray, to India and we didn't have one bite in 2 weeks, unlike all the people with the expensive stuff. It was some years ago and I'm sure the Avon range has changed, it may have been similar to the one someone suggested earlier.
