Breaking Toe Nail.

My son's on a months course of antibiotics for a fungal infection in his big toe. It's clearing up and not as yellow but, the nail is splitting and one half is hanging on by a thread. Any advice on what I can do with it today? TIA

When I had this problem I was told that it would be better if the nail came off altogether. Maybe half will come off, then the other, but I'm no expert.
