Grey Sqirrels, were introduced sometime in the nineteenth century from North America, whether they were escapees or deliberatley let go, I have no Idea, but the probable start point of their takeover from the Reds is Woburn in Bedfordshire. Maybe someone else can give you a bit more info.

We have a place close to where I live, which has a breeding programme for Reds, so I can see them there, when I was young, it was all Reds, but thats the way it goes.

Brought over in 1876, 'cos someone thought they looked cute.

thanks for that.
Thought they were brought over on the ships from Canada, years ago. The grey are more aggressive than the red, thats why they have taken over.

Don't know how anyone else feels, but I'd like to see all the grey critters exterminated. As jaberwocky says, once you've seen a red, the greys no longer look cute.
