I've seen other vehicles do it. How do they get away with it? Maybe they don't of course. Maybe they're caught on camera and stopped further up the motorway.
I saw the film of this lorry on the news this morning. As you say Mikey, it's a big one !?!?

Well this chap didn't get awaY with it ! I shall probably be howled down for saying this but once he had made his mistake, he sure showed us how to do the prefect U turn !
Yes, he was in the wrong but he did a great u turn.!
EEK !
Personally I'd of just got back onto the motorway the correct way. Unless the slip road back on was closed? Still I don't think I'd be pulling a stunt like that.

Dismo...once he had realised his mistake, there wasn't much alternative. Reversing back up the ramp would have arguably been more dangerous.

Sometimes road layouts are very complicated and mistakes can occur. Very early one morning last December, before it got light, I went around a roundabout the wrong way, outside the entrance to the Exeter Services on the M5. I have driven over that route many times in the past but it was dark and very misty. Luckily there was hardly any traffic, except a friendly lorry driver who waved me down. No harm done but it could have been different a few hours later, when the area was thronged with traffic. My excuse is that that particular road layout is very complicated at the best of times. There loads of signs, all over the place and you can't see the wood for the trees sometimes.

There for the Grace of God, etc, etc.
he didn't make a mistake - it was a conscious act in an attempt to escape from a predicament at the tollgate. he left the motorway at junction T5 in the correct manner but was unable to get through the toll gates because his card was rejected. the intermediate toll gates are all unmanned so there was nobody to help him, and the intercom operator couldn't speak his language. so he turned round (it's plenty wide enough to do that) and retraced his path back to the main carriageway, where he was filmed doing his U-turn.
If the driver had been pulling a Tautliner ( Curtain Sided Trailer) depending on the height of the load inside although strapped, with the tightness of the turn, the load would have come through the curtain, he was also very lucky that the Air Lines ( For the Trailers braking / lights ) never got court up causing the lines to snap, THAT then would have caused e Unit / Trailer to come to a complete stop.
A French lorry driver did something similar locally several years back. It remains vivid because I remember how distraught the wife with a 3 week old child of the 24 year old driver who hit his vehicle was.
I recall trying to sweep as much windscreen glass off him as possible with sticky tape prior to putting him on the table for emergency surgery.
I'll also never forget the surgeon leaving the table after an hour to go and tell her that he was going to survive but he was going to have to amputate her husbands leg.
To be fair, he did signal!
Zac, Signal or not, what he done was dangerous.
When my step daughter in law had her baby her parents drove down to visit. God knows how they went down the wrong slip road....onto the motorway and were both killed.
We were devastated but so grateful no-one else was hurt.

Would the thing to do in the case of this lorry driver be to sit tight and phone the police for help in getting onto the motorway without endangering anyone else?
WHOOOOOOOOOOOSH!
Hiya Sweetie, I gather the this bloke came down the slip road, to do that he must have take a very wide sweep to get into the position to turn into the slip road, If what I stated earlier regards the Air Lines would have happen that would have caused the Motorway to close, he's a very lucky Idiotic Inexperienced driver to get away with that.
gness: //Would the thing to do in the case of this lorry driver be to sit tight and phone the police for help in getting onto the motorway without endangering anyone else?//

Agreed. Had he called the police and asked for assistance, depending on how the police felt at the time, he might of got away with a caution.
Yeah, Chill. Tut.
