/// many gays call each other ‘f****ts’, why supporters of an English football team called Tottenham Hotspur, which has a large Jewish following, call each other ‘Y*ds’, and why some ardent feminists like to use the word ‘C**t’ with impunity. ///

/In that case Andy the 'N' word would become a term of affection, if a white person was to greet his black mate with the word? /

So, if groups of elderly men affectionately referred to each other as (say) 'The Old Gits' ....

it would be ok for a young person to greet them with 'Hello you old git'?
Ask any chap with Pakistani lineage if he thinks that the P word is just a description of his nationality dave50, but stand well back. It is used primarily as a term of abuse. I make no apology for repeating this YouTube link, about the EDL. Disgraceful doesn't even come close to describing the first few seconds. Those of a nervous nature may not want to click on the link.

Mikey, when I left teaching there was a large group/gang of Asian boys who called themselves 'The Bradford P****s' with pride - this was against the Halifax and Huddersfield groupings. They weren't very nice boys. It's the same thing, others can't even use it as a handy abbreviation so it is a sort of power lever.

As advised, I am not putting myself forward as even a casual observer of the mores of youth culture.

However, I would not suggest that any young person greets an old person as an 'Old Git', since a walking stick up the nose, or a zimmer frame around the back of the ear can cause offence!
jourdain2...Interesting story ! But I would maintain that if white people hadn't been using the P word as a term of abuse in the first place, it would not have been appropriated by these boys afterwards. The same goes for American black youths using the N word.

What saddens me is that there are still plenty of white people in Britain that feely use the word, without understanding the hurt it causes to non-whites.
I'm afraid I must include members of my own family in that.

I have mentioned this recently on AB but my Hindu friends, some very gentle and hospitable people, who invited me the their sons wedding, are now being spat at in the streets and called the P word. They have lived in Britain since being ejected from Kenya when they were children and they tell me this kind of racial abuse is on the increase these days.

When I was younger I was sometimes referred to as a "Mick" despite being born in London, just because my dad was Irish. It would seem that ignorance is a difficult thing to eradicate but we must still go on trying. At least you no longer see those signs on boarding houses that proclaimed
"No Blacks, No Dogs and No Irish"

Perhaps it is the same as being called a 'Brit' despite being born in England.
/Perhaps it is the same as being called a 'Brit' despite being born in England./

Logic fail aog!

an English person is a 'Brit' (assuming that is an abbreviation of British) because England is a sub-set of Britain

Being a Londoner is not a sub-set of being a 'Mick'

Just as being a 'Brit' is not a sub-set of being English
I won't post the youTube link here because the N word will be displayed and I'm sure that would break the AB rules.
If you want to see probably the funniest comedian in the world(Chris Rock) giving his take on it just type
'Can white people say n*****' into youTube and watch the first clip, 3.45 in duration.
Following that, at the end of the clip watch 'The one time white ppl can say N'.
Absolute genius.
