Okay, it's not strictly speaking "a pond" ...

It's a green ice bucket that I left out on the balcony ...

It filled with rain water. And now, it's got these teeny, weeny little things swimming around in it. They're like tiny, tiny tadpole shaped things.

Any ideas what they could be? And will they grow into big, scary things?

I can't empty out the ice bucket now, coz they would all die.

Maybe they will turn out to be a delicacy somewhere?
You won't think they're cute when they're buzzing round your bedroom at night biting every part of your exposed flesh.
Kill 'em.
Only the inside above the water line. Better than dying an agonising death from skeeterbite.

Psy ... I did toy with the idea of cooking them.
jj, fry them and then dip them in choc and eat them.

Bit small to dip.

I also wondered ... are there nutrients in my bucket of rain water? How are they surviving?
Just put a bit of washing up liquid in the bucket, they will sink to the bottom and drown. Seriously each one of them will hatch out into a biting buzzing mosquito very soon if you leave them.
Primordial soup - leave it long enough and you'll have a whole new tribe on your balcony.
Have you resolved your impending infestation problem jj?
sounds like the larval stage of airborne insects such as midges/mossies/gnats etc If you have a pond the fish will love IT or even a tropical tank , just pour the water in and watch ,...if you really dont want to killl the little critters, they will be gone in the spring and feed the birds anyway :-)
