Why should i convert mpeg files to aac on itunes?

I dont understand why it offers this option - ive just done it and the files are the same size and sound the same

If offers it if you want to do it.

There is no need to do it. If anything you may well lose quality slightly. Though you probably won't be able to tell.

ok but why should i want to do it? what advantages are to be had?

There are no advantages, unless you are the sort of person that wants their music to be all of the same format.

The option is there for any non-aac files to be converted, in case that file is for example a .wav file. In that case you'd likely want to compress it down using aac.
