Naomi, I dont see that it just needs to be taught as history, they need to be taught about what is going on today across the world with religion. I think that children need to know about all religions and the affects that they have on our lives today. I accept that no God should be promoted as being a factual figure or that one religion is better than another, but religion is still a very big thing in our lives today whether we believe or not. People are still being slaughtered every day in the name of religion.
Ratter, I understand what you’re saying, and I would have no objection, as part of social studies, to children being informed of the various religions that people around the world adhere, but RE, no. That's something very different.
Ratter, I think you and I are probably in agreement. In my opinion, RE as an individual subject should be removed from the curriculum and any reference made to religion confined to social studies.
