I spent one afternoon in the sun and now covered in bites which have hard lumps around them. They are sore and itchy. Has anybody got any bright ideas as to a) stop the critters biting and b) what to put on them - anthisan worked but you can only use it for 3 days.

In order to prevent them, I swear by Avon Skin So Soft body oil spray - it's brilliant and it really works.

Once you're bitten - AfterBite alcohol pen stick. Keep applying it. However, you need to catch them within a few hours of the bite to be really effective.

If is was a few days ago, calamine lotion is soothing.
Avon sss works for me too. The blue one.
TCP gives you relief too - a bit smelly but who cares. Try and dab it on each bite. Does really soothe.

Who said? News to me.
Agree with boxtops, a lavender spray is supposed to be a deterrent if SSS not available to you
A friend was telling me about the Avon product only the other day. Must try it ! My OH usually has a bad reaction to any bite so we always keep cheap box (Tesco) antihistamine tablets in car and handbag. Take one asap after being bitten
"jungle formula" if ya cant get avon stuff

Thanks to all of you for your tips etc. a friend told me about SSS and I got some but not sure if I have the right one. Mine says 'original' dry oil spray + jojoba and has some blue one the label? I will also get some after bite and tcp( that takes me back to childhood) squad, regarding anthisan, it actually says on the tube 'do not use on the same area of skin for mare than three days. Don't understand why I always get bitten and react so badly it makes the summer a misery. Sorry for the tardy response was watching men's gymnastics on the telly - their fit bodies cheered me up a bit!!
Margo......that is very confusing.
Yes, if there is no improvement after 3days, then yes, discontinue the cream, but if it is improving the situation, then one can use it for a week or so.

I continue to fail to get to grips with modern medicine.
These are clegs ( diptera )
awful - I dont sunbathe

some may be infected ( greater than 10 cm )

Anything with DEET will repel.
Lemon bitter citrus oil is sudduv green - smells good -as a repellent

If you go around with speedos only, then you wil be bitten.

Shaded areas by water are the worst.
