how would you cook a pair of kippers?

I know how I would usually cook them but have been asked to prepare them a different way and just wondered if this was a normal way for others that I had not heard of.

recipes please.

If they're 'real' kippers...ie they still have the head and tail and were properly smoked, not just dyed...they're already 'cooked', by definition, so all you have to do is 'heat' them. sounds good to me paddy.

haven't got a poacher (except after the rabbits) and don't fancy cooking them to be wet.

I have always poached them in a frying pan in shallow water, slightly bubbling.
Crack black pepper over them brush them with butter and grill them with a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley- then serve with a k n o b of butter over them and more uncooked parsley. yummm.
My mum always baked them with a bit of butter, and they were absolutely delicious.
Kippers, along with Marmite, Branston pickle and Cheddar, are all things unobtainable here and all consequently craved for. Whatever you do, enjoy them on my behalf please.

personally have never cooked/heated them through with liquids, like milk or water of any kind. marinating with oil/butter and mustard and gently warming is still my favourite.

thanks for your replies. khandro another marmite lover. hurrah!
Most likely I'd heat them in the oven, but I might just shove them in a frying pan. I don't think it matters, they just need heating for a bit.
Try spreading marmalade on them, (yes, really!), and grill them. Tastes delicious, and the marmalade stops them from repeating on you!

thanks for that tip heathfield.

are you in Scotland kanewood and if not where are you please?
Add touch of butter and seasoning wrap in foil and heat through in oven

clarissa d-w gives a lovely recipe.

surely poaching is like boiling. water and kippers? bit of a no-no imo.
I would wake them up first.
In someone else's house :-)
I put them in a jug, cover them in boiling water and let them stand for 10 minutes
Have they not already been cooked in the kippering process? Pop under the grill with a bit of butter on them and warm for a few minutes.
As regards 'cooked', that's exactly what I said yesterday, Sandy!
