Does anyone know if I can bring a small box (sealed in cellophane) of dates into UK from UAE through customs ?

You should be ok, however I'd still ask a Customs Officer upon arrival, just to be on the safe side:

Longer answer:
When entering the Uk from a country outside the EU you can bring in up to 2kg of fruit and/or vegetable products (excluding potatoes) as long as they're free from pests and diseases, in your personal luggage and solely for consumption by yourself and/or your family and friends. (i.e. you can't sell them).

I always bring dates back from the Middle East before christmas. I like to get the arabic bread as well. I just wish I could bring some hammour through - that would be really nice!
My niece brings in dates from Dubai for people here....not for me as I loath them!
