Cameron has really been a bit of a cock and embarrassed the country.
The reality was that the group with most MEPs get to nominate the commissioner. His group got very few votes so did not get to nominate. When it became obvious that Junckers would be nominated, Cameron insisted on a vote of heads of Government from the 28 member countries. This publicly underlined our isolation when 26 opted for Junckers.
Farage won the UK Euro elections and the Conservatives came third. It is absurd that Cameron believes he should have a say in who the new commissioner is.
Cameron announced 2 years ago that he would renegociate our membership. Then did *** all. He is now making the excuse that the new commissioner will not be sympathetic to our case, without any proof that that is the case. The commissioner needs to be pragmatic, and if it comes to the possiblity of losing a member, they will negociate.

In 2009, Labour came third in the Euro elections but Gordon Brown got a say in choosing the commisioner, and Cameron who had the most MEPs didn't. That is clearly undemocratic.
So they decided at this election that the group with most votes would nominate a candidate. The other groups could nominate a different candidate, but in reality the group with most MEPs would win. After the fact, Cameron insisted the heads of Government should take a vote (in the past there was no vote, just a decision based on the consensus of their discussions). And the rest is history.
