An unlocked phone means you are not restricted to one service provider.
You will need a micro sim card for the S5.

Not sure I know what a free SIM phone is, unless it is one where you buy the phione and they give you a free SIM. A SIM free phone, however, is the opposite. It is a phone that doesn't come with a SIM included, so you can put your existing SIM in. You ought not assume that means it is not locked to a service provider though. Check that seperately. But it probably has more chance on being unlocked than one that comes with a SIM.

So are you going to pay around £500 for a phone with no sim in it?

Cos the Samsung Galaxy S5 costs around £500.
For £3 you can have your existing mini sim cut to micro or nano sim or DIY.
