Look for winrar which is available free from some sites.

what is one? never heard of it.

It's a form of file compression like winzip.

.rar is a compressed folder.
York310 answer is correct, but I've been using this one for some time, nice and easy.

winrar isn't free. 7zip is totally free and will also open rar files

I can recommend 7-Zip (Windows only), or PeaZip (Windows and Linux)
