£24,000 is the average I've seen most often.
PP- I haven't seen the pension figure quoted so don't know whether it includes state pensions, but the figure will be low as many people have no private pension or only a minimal one, and some will only have worked part time or for part of their working lives. Some people can't afford to contribute much but I think the main problem is that people don't appreciate how much you need to stash away each week (approaching £100 a week) to fund anything like a decent pension for 25 years of retirement.
Public sector leaders quote averages of something like £2000 a year, although that will include people who had only very short periods of service , maybe at near minimum wage and part time, as well as civil servants with gold plated pensions. It's another area where average figures need to be to be used with caution
