Why Are Some Constantly Attached To Their Phone?

Some people carry their phone around in their hand wherever they are and whatever they are doing, looking and checking it every few seconds. Anything that's going on around them is blocked out and only whats going on through the phone matters. It's all rather sad.

I can't understand why joggers/runners/walkers etc are traipsing round the countryside here with ear plugs jammed in. Surely the pleasure of the outdoors is listening to the birds' songs or the peace and quiet.
