Six men are in intensive care after taking part in clinical drug trials, They Volunteered to take part in testing an Anti-inflamatory drug.

The men suffered multiple organ failure in which two are said to be critically ill.

Apparently {parexel} have said they have followed the recommended guidelines, and an investigation is taking place.

My question is, does this strenghen the case to test animals or is this the chance you take when you volunteer for these type of trials, bearing in mind you do get paid.

From what i gather the majority of volunteers seem to be students, i assume this is the case to make ends meet.

Ps, i'm not saying for one moment that testing on animals is the right way, but what is the way forward in your view.

Sorry about this laurence2,

Drisgirl it was Tony Johnstone, a golfer who has been accepted for the new trials of Campath...

The search will always continue in all diseases...

ahem.. sorry asci i guess it is my fault for picking such an aggressive sounding name but i am actually an "expert in her field"! (not sure about the expert bit yet but i am definitely a her!). Thanks for your kind comments!

Oh was it asci - wonder which drug he had been accepted for trialling - it def was a MS one.Anyway it doesnt matter I'm just thankful for anyone who volunteers when they dont have to.

asci - it was Copaxone.Should have checked first.

Oh, morg_monster... many appologies, still nice to talk to an expert in her field and with passion!! I always thought, with your tag that you worked in a morgue...oh dear :)

Hiya Drisgirl... Copaxone is a great drug, better than the interferons as I've read. I have a friend at HBO that is on goat serum and wants off it to go back to hyperbaric oxygen therapy, says it's def. better!!!

i think with MND and ms trials they coincide maybe because of neuron destruction? But I really do not have any idea, there was also lorenzos oil for a different trial on brain things and, again, ms was involved.. Big 'ol puzzle for the scientists to work on....

My cousin was involved in the Lorenzos Oil trial - he had to go to London for assessment. Some patients were given it and the others were given placebos - obviously or they wouldnt be able to determine if there was an improvement.I still think it has some qualities which would benefit some MS patients. as you are well aware, there are varying degrees.Given the chance I'm sure most sufferers would try anything to alleviate the symptoms.

Sorry asci - forgot he also tried the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as well (thats what they use for deep sea divers who have the bends isnt it?) I get confused sometimes - and he found that really helpful.

Sorry lawrie - not hi-jacking but this type of topic tends to diversify.Interesting thread lawrie:)

Hi there laurence, big smiles to you and thanks for the stars!!! :-) me too sorry for the hi jack.

Right, back to my tap of a nose!

kindest thoughts to you all xx

i think the main problem for many people who are anti animal testing is when the tests are for yet another shampoo or lipstick or perfume because it contains yet another chemical that claims to last forever or glue hair ends back together or something

but if its for genuine medical reasons then i think its something i can swallow

Well said joko!!

If you feel that drug companies are taking advantage of the world's population, preying on the young and vulnerable and in this case the african population then watch The Constant Gardener.

When testing for trials for drugs the young men as guinea pigs did not expect to die. THe company responisble, German of course, did not follow procedures. How many times has this happenend at the expense of humans. They claimed that the drugs were tested vigourously on animals. Just shows. Have you ever thought that animals can eat raw meat without a reaction and yet if we did we could have a severe reaction? Rats can eat almost anything without being affected. Does that mean that we can do the same? What on earth did they put in the drugs to have such a reaction?

Making 13,000 a year from being a guinea pig. Not bad money.
I know. That is why young people are easy prey. It also shows how much revenue the Drug industry makes.
nikkita, not wishing to be rude here, but how do you know the company did not follow procedures? This is inside knowledge you have is it? or did you know before? And why german, of course? do you mean that all drug companies are german, or that because it's gone wrong it's bound to have been german or what? Not quite getting your point there
Morg - have you found out any more about this trial? I know of at least one SD who's primate study is being reviewed this week by the MHRA. No issues raised by this study at all, tho SD is of course very nervous about this week. From what I can gather from friends who specialise in humanised antibodies, the hope is that this is a production error but it may be some time before we find out for certain.
