Well said, uberlady - obviously a woman of some experience.
I am a single mother of 3, I do find that the holiday companies do extend their prices sooooo much I can barely afford a holiday, in fact last year was the first holiday I could afford, my oldest is nearly 16!!! I have never taken my children out of school during term time, HOWEVER, if it was a chance of a lifetime thing then YES absolutely I would take them out of school.

The standard of spelling and punctuation on this thread makes me wonder if some of the contributors took a few too many term-time holidays when they were at school.

Of course it's not a 'free country'. If it were, we'd all be free to do whatever we wanted. Attempting to ensure that all children receive a basic level of education, regardless of their parents' sense of responsibility, appears, to me, to be a positive endeavour.

Excuse me,JamesEverton, it is late at night and why should anyone review their typing errors for your perusal? A holiday during term time does no harm whatsoever. My parents always took us during school term because of budget and also my father could not take holiday during school holidays because there were other working mums who applied for Holiday Leave in his office, first. It was always OK'd by the school, no exams missed and towards end of term. There were plenty of children who were off sick sometimes for 2 weeks - they had no choice but to miss school. But they were given enough homework to catch up.

nikita**: I wasn't referring to you! I know that the first sentence of my previous post was flippant but it just seemed to be a bit of an own goal for some people to express their belief, that taking holidays during term-time didn't do any harm, in such poor English. It may suggest that their educational expectations are not very high.

It has nothing to do with educational expectations being less when taking holiday during term time. Families who may do this actually look for a better quality of holiday for their money. Nothing wrong with that. Quality meaing one can go further afield instead of being tied down to camping and Costa Da Sol which would normally be the only affordable type of holiday. My family went camping a lot and as my parents were getting older decided to go to more interesting places but had a budget. THere is no excuse for extremely high cost of holidays during the school holidays. It is impossible. We end up not being able to go and if we somehow managed to we would also pay double charges on all the rides, excursions on top of holiday cost. Free has been used in the wrong context year but I understand the what they mean - and that is CHOICE. So do not tie us down when other families who do not put education first would rather their children stay and have even less holiday weeks so that they can earn more money. Children are not being put first but adult with their own selfish views. My parents only wanted the best holiday for us and I love them more for that.

Sorry, Costa del Sol. My typing was so fast and I do not want you being petty about my typing and presentation.

Besides that Why should i pay 600 more for the same holiday, they can Fine me if they like it won't bother me"

If it doesn't bother you being fined, instead, you could put your "fine money" towards paying for the full price of a holiday in the 6 week period and then you wouldn't need to take your kids out of school.
It would still be cheaper .

This law is an utter joke. When you see what school's turn kids into lately I think everyone would be better off home educated.

As far as I knew it is law that every child has an education, but not law as to where it is educated. Take children on holidays with their study books and who could do a thing about it?

No, silly, you learn from a holiday - but you probably will not understand it - Please dont talk that generation stuff - all young people these days are not like how I was in my days nonsense.
im 25
So?
-- answer removed --
Just responding to your 'dont give me that generations stuff'
saying i was 25 meant I didn't leave school all that long ago. Seems like your responses are meant to put everyone elses answer down in quite a rude way - I should imagine you're still at school then...
Jason, why do you think i was rude to u? Is the word 'silly' offensive? And anyway it was the older generation that brought up this generation. What age are the politicians governing our lives? You cannot blame 'young' people all the time. Every generation goes on about it as soon as they leave school!
If the "Authorities" are so concerned about children missing out on a few weeks schooling, then why, when I was a child in the days of ILEA, did they not care about me being absent for months due to them refusing to sort out a bully who made my life hell and left me feeling physically sick at the thought of going to the place...? A bunch of hypocritical "barstewards".....
