In 2012, Fernando Alonso would have beaten Sebastian Vettel; in 2008, Felipe Massa would have denied Lewis Hamilton; and in 2003 Kimi Raikkonen would have edged out Michael Schumacher.
I personally think it's a farce. Why SHOULD the last race be worth double points? There'd be holy hell to pay if the Premier League introduced such a rule for the last game of the season. There are those who believe that it has been done because Vettell has had the title sewn up before the final race in previous seasons. The belief being that such dominance will not be possible under the new points system.
By doubling the points in the last race, It means the title probably wont be decided till the last race!

Or in other words milk to the very end

i have no thoughts either way, twofeathers
I wouldn't mind the double points idea if, say, there were three or four races scattered across the season that got double points -- say the more famous or prestigious.
As decmangan asks: Yes the idea did come from Bernie Ecclestone "who is close to Sebastian Vettel, but is more than intelligent enough to realise that, in an era dominated by the German and his Red Bull team, a bit of extra pizazz to keep interest going for longer each year might come in handy".
