I have my iPad set for alerts for receiving e mails . These alerts work while I am on my iPad . But when it is closed there is no alert and a few mails have been delivered but no alerts .my friend has same iPad as myself and hers goes off when iPad is not in use. We have compared settings and can't see anything different .

The gmail app bings every time it gets an email

Who are you with for email? if they have an app, try it instead of the mail app.
