Microsoft Office to Open Office

How do I move old Word files onto Open Office? I don't have Microsoft Office so it won't let me edit, copy etc

You can set .doc files to open in openoffice by changing the filetype association.
Right click a .doc file, click "open with...", then click "default program". The dialog that follows will lead you through the settings of how to change the association.

when you install OO it usually asks if you want to make it the default action for opening .doc files
