Have you seen the news, the 2 houses in Clacton blown up in a suspected gas explosion, looks like there are a few casualties.

There's a lot to be said for an all electric house. :(

It's dreadful

I've got gas as well as electricity and it does worry me sometimes but considering how many people have gas it's thankfully not a common occurrence...is it? Please tell me it's not. :0/ I worry about everything.
very uncommon statistically. Not saying its happened here but usual reasons are meter bypassing or amateur DIY.
I do not wish to alarm anyone but I agree rockyracoon, there is a lot to be said for an all electric house although the neighbours may have gas?

It does worry me when I hear things like this but then I suppose you have to put things into perspective don't you.

Let's hope there are no fatalities.

i'm sure the casualties will find that reassuring scrivens

Not if you live next to someone with a gas supply.

//there is a lot to be said for an all electric house// . . . Not really, we have in the past heated the Kitchen Diner with the radiant heat from a lump of angle iron being heated over the smallest burner on a gas hob when the electric's been off, no gas/no heat at all. we lived in there for a couple of days, in deepest darkest Norfolk!
What a mess !! Poor souls.
I have landed at Clacton a couple of times years ago. In those days it had a footpath across the middle of one of the grass runways.
Robinia, I wouldn't worry. There are probably thousands and thousands of homes with gas, but these explosions are rare. I have gas too.
I phoned a friend who only lives a couple of miles away from where it happened and she was oblivious. She did wonder what all the helicopters were for! I'm very sorry for the casualties but glad my friend is okay.
- make that two houses gone
a friend of mine had a neighbour with a gas leak which he tried to find with a match, no prizes for guessing what happened next.

People never cease to amaze with their stupidity!
From someone who marketed gas, rest assure the incidents are very low. The biggest cause of explosion is folk turning on lights - or turning lights or appliances off, the switch sparking and that provides ignition and up you go......if you smell gas, get all out, keep the house clear of people and call the emergency services from outside....let them handle it.
in 2006 a house a few down from mine exploded due to a gas leak. I was walking out of the door to go to work just as it happened. It was terrifying. I didn't sleep for weeks after and was scared to turn lights on and off in case the same happened to my house. I really feel them.
