.... might sound like a silly question, but have you waited long enough for the time delay lock, to allow the door to be opened ??
Have you tried pulling the mains plug out?
Question Author
We did wait long enough for the time delay lock. Turned it off at the mains but did not pull plug out.
Their manual suggests it needs a re-spin because there's still water in it. I had a Hotpoint that used to do this and it drove me mad - the spin vibration would make a part in the release mechanism come loose and I had to take the back off the machine and release it by hand (until I complained and got a replacement). I've never bought a Hotpoint since.
That was my next suggestion Prudie.
It could be that there's some water left in the drum, so it needs to respin to empty it.
It could be down to a blocked filter, or some other fault, or it could be some glich that happens every now and again and won't need remedial work.
Just try respinning and see if that helps :)

Tried a re-spin - after 10 seconds, the thing shut the cycle down
turn it off and on
i had a zanussi that only lasted 18 months, never again
Hmmm - maybe the machine is sensing that it can't empty. Check the drain pipe is clear and hasn't moved due to vibrations - it may have moved and now have a kink in it so it can't drain water out.
Just in case you don't have it here is the manual

Try what Giz says, check the drain pipe is clear and the drain pump not clogged. So will it not spin at all?
Question Author
Turned it off again, cleaned the filter - still won't re-spin
.... hope you sort it - going out on the beer now :(
How irritating for you. Only other thing I might try is putting it through a whole cycle again, otherwise it might need an engineer visit :-(
Question Author
Given up - engineer coming round in the morning. Thanks for your contributions everyone
Bummer. Let us know what happens.
