After telling one of the family that I had read "the hobbit" but had never seen the film, I got the DVD for Christmas, and so far, about one third of the way through it I have heard only a few words of dialogue, the (back round) music is so overpowering that its doubtful that I will bother watching the rest, surely the words matter more than the music, I am so disappointed as I was looking forward to comparing the film to the book (a hobby of mine) why do they create such trash? they should have made it a CD instead if they didn't want the dialogue.

doesn't the DVD have subtitles on it?

My hearing is poor but I saw the film in a cinema and understood most of it okay. Could have been better, but pretty good by modern standards.
Background music is the bane of my life it spoils numerous programmes we watch a lot of the crime channel programmes and there are no subtitles and you cannot hear what is being said for the so called dramatic background music, I wish I could tell the producers to calm it down it is unnecessary,
Go to the start of the film and there should be a Set Up option. Click on English for Hard of hearing or whatever is similar.
rather than being "background", the music seems to have been planned as an integral part of the cinematic experience. perhaps it would have been better produced as a Bollywood extravaganza.......
