It depends on whether they are pathogens or the useful types. They use bacteria in the sewerage works to oxygenate the water and "eat" the waste. Some microbes are used for antibiotics such as penicillin, also to vein blue cheeses (again a strain of penicillin). In fact without microbes life on earth would not exist.
