Shouldn't potential Ministers first be given an exam so as to qualify them for the Ministry they may later take charge over?

That depends on whether you feel that the role of a Minister is to perform well in a pub quiz or to make key policy decisions that affect the future course of their department's remit as it affects our daily life.
what next?

chairmen of banks expected to have relevant experience of banking?

Their main qualification is the ability to direct and manage a large department full of people who do know a lot about the subject

However, she is guilty of stupidity and failure to prepare when she hasn't brushed up on what is essentially Sports General Knowledge
I would think that if she could answer more than one of those questions thwn she had too much time on her hands.

This is only slightly less tedious and pointless than asking David Cameron 'how much is a pint of milk?' and implying that ignorance equals 'being out of touch'
I wonder how many ministers, past and present actually have a full understanding of their department.

Not many I would wager, and in most appointments why would they?
most career politicians are just that...they have no or extremely limited experience of the real world and have no specific knowledge of the depts specific role they head

one day health next day defence etc......
Marion Bartoli is quite forgettable..........
Doesn't really bother me that the Sports Minister fails a Sports quiz.

It is more alarming that someone whose qualification is a 2.1 in modern history ends up as chancellor.
It really irritates me when people claim that knowing the answers to quiz questions equates to "intelligence". It does not. i work with some very clever people who are useless at quizzes. I also have a friend I do quizzes with who is brilliant at them, but is not really all that intelligent.
More to the point, could she explain the off-side rule ?
Who remembers Wigan winning the Cup? It was only in May. Who did they beat? As for Bartoli, another instantly forgettable champion, I did just remember her, but these questions are not a true test of sporting understanding. I am keen on horseracing, but I couldn't tell you what won the Oaks or the Derby this year, still less the National, yet I was present at all three as always. Such matters are transitory. Only if the performance is memorable; seeing Persian Punch or Frankel winning, for example; does it rank as worthy of remembering.
AOG. I always read all of your posts out of interest.
However your suggestions in this thread, have to rank as something
approaching the most inane drivel I have yet to read, after nearly four
years as an AB member.
