one of the worst countries for incidences of rape, look at the case of the young lady on the bus and see what they did. Can;t understand the man's mentality at all.

Before you get too outraged it rather looks as if he was taken severely out of context

"Do we have the enforcement?" Mr Sinha said at the event in New Delhi on Tuesday about whether sports betting should be legalised.

"It is very easy to say that if you can't enforce it, it's like saying if you can't prevent rape, you enjoy it."


In the current climate the analogy was a rather unfortunate and ill advised one but people are deliberately making trouble here

And journalists are hoping people will be too lazy to read down the page

i did, but this sort of attitude is pretty common if one looks into it, and watch the programme they did a while ago on rape in India, made for disturbing watching, and indeed the case of the student that was raped on the bus was vile beyond belief,

I had to read the article three times before I got it.

He was not saying that if you can't prevent rape you should enjoy it.

Please re-read the article. He was not condoning rape.

The first time I read it, I came to that conclusion, but you really have to read it carefully, because he worded his thoughts extremely badly. He was talking about betting laws.

He is guilty of using an appalling analogy.

The problem arises with the fact that direct quotation marks are used for a quote/soundbite directly attributed to him, so it's down to poor journalistic presentation.

Having read the article, he chose the wrong analogy in his comments, thank goodness he has apologised.


If he had said the comment baldly as indicated by the OP , then a wholly different matter.

I'm in two minds whether Sky have deliberately reported this in a manner designed to mislead or whether it's poor journalism

I'm tending to lean towards the former I have to say

They've written at the top in bold:

India's top police chief is facing calls for his resignation after he said: "If you can't prevent rape, you might as well enjoy it."

That wasn't what he said - they've missed out the start of the sentence

It's the sort of thing I've come to expect from the Daily Mail

No one is denying surely the terrible incidence of Rape there - I am commenting on the reported comment by Ranjit Sinha, as in the link.

He was ill-advised in the phrase he used,but wasn't condoning rape by the sound of it. This is being twisted to make it look sensational. "Police officer says something slightly insensitive" is not news.

I think we should recognise that two different things are being woven into the same thread here.

Because of the recent horrific rape cases in India, it has now become the focus of world attention, when in fact, it should be the USA, which has four times the number of rape cases per capita than India.

That's being mixed into this badly worded report, which at first glance makes it look as if this copper is saying, "Well, if you can't prevent rape, you may as well enjoy it".

Anyone reading that would jump to the conclusion (as I did when I first read it) that 'no wonder India is facing a problem if this is how senior policemen view rape"

This is not what he said.

I only clocked that after reading the article again carefully.

India is rightly facing flack over this, but it isn't the rape capital of the world.

This is a lethal combination of a seriously misjudged analogy coupled with sensationlist journalism - something akin to a bucket of petrol / bonfire interface.

This man made a serious error of judgement in using a very poor analogy to illustrate a point he was making.

The press have seized on his comment and quoted it out of context, inferring that he said something which he did not say - which is that he thinks women being raped should enjoy it if they cannot prevent it.

Context is everything.

He is right to apologise for he poor choice of comparison, but he does not deserve to be pilloried for saying something which he did not actually convey if the full meaning and structure of what he said is made available.
