To a bird the nest has one function- to raise young. It is not a home or anything of the sort for the rest of the year!! Birds sleep on a perch at other times of a year- generally under cover away from predators. However if the weather is particularly cold, small birds such as blue tits and wrens will use old nest boxes as roosts. Particularly with wrens, the number of them that cram into an old nest to keep warm is quite amazing- the record stands at around 60!!!
All birds nest in spring......other times they just roost in bushes/ trees/under roof tiles/eaves/empty buildings, anywhere weather-proof
I switched on my Bird box cam and saw a Bluetit roosting in it. Checked again tonight and it was still there
