I was once told that a crossword entry containing a "tippexed" alteration would not normally be accepted.

Is this true?

i also understood that to be true but i don't know where i heard it.
This question has been asked before, and I can safely say that providing the resulting entry is clear and concise most editors will accept it. Having worked in Fleet Street, I can never remember an entry being disqualified because it had been tippexed!

Some competitions have a condition that no altered entries will be accepted - which is probably where you got the idea from and have proceeded to overgeneralise from it.

Read the entry conditions - if there aren't any it will be acceptable.

Thanks everyone.I will continue to use tippex with confidence!
do it in pencil first and go over it in ink when everything is right
Allgood - We always copy our crosswords before working on them so it doesn't matter about alterations, then we just write it on the newspaper when we've finished. Ideal if you have a computer printer and scanner.
Hi Wheelbrace - Try this: Cut out a small square from the border of your newspaper, 5mm x 5mm. Then place over your error with a slight trace of PrittStick. No-one will know and you'll never use Tippex again. ja
photocopy first and work on that, then write on the original
I once wrote to one of the FTxword compilers on this point and he specifically confirmed that tippexed entries were acceptable :-)

My FINAL thank you on this matter to all those who have responded. Latterly to patallgood, johnalex, poorclare and Misstoddler for excellent suggestions.

I have at different times used these methods but sometimes I get very lazy and Tippex is so easy isn't it?

Successful solving to you all.
