Gotta be columbo. The seventies ones though, not the newer ones.
"COPS". ...Non-fiction!!!
"CSI" (original, not "Miami" - though that's tolerable), though if "Due South" is allowed, I'd pick the mountie's adventures!
Cagney and Lacey - the best. It had everything, great characters, great stories, fast action - and New York!! Nothing else comes near. Starsky and Hutch, Columbo and Chips were all good fun, but not in the same league!!
Columbo, with Frost a close second.
Blimey, the arts and literature section is barren enough withought posting TV questions in it.
[Now moved to Films & TV. - AB editor]
I have to agree with LeMarchand....CSI (and again, I prefer the Las Vegas one to the Miami one.....there are too many squeaky voices in the Miami one!)
Columbo? that was a set of films not a series! Lets say that my vote goes to Police Squad (ok "That my vote goes to Police Squad!"). I'll get me coat.....

no, Darth, cops is cops, Columbo counts, as would Dixon of Dock Green but not The Blue Lamp as it was a one off movie. Anything that had a series.. my own favorite was the one with the Fat Scouse piggy that was shot with wobbly cameras as if a documentary but actually fiction; the fatto was always clipping rogues round the ear quite hard and i don't remember what it was called 'Cops' maybe and it was on BBC2 i think.. is that the same one as KEJ2000 [thought he was in usa?]
Columbo - A collection of films? That would be one hell of a collection. There were around 70 episodes made! It was more of an occasional series.
A bit like Inspector Morse.
I had a huge crush on Paul Michael Glaser (even in those cardigans) so I always watched S & H. I thought The Sweeney was great but I think because David Jason is such a hugely versatile actor, Frost must be one of my favourites. I just about remember Dixon of Dock Green and Z cars too - what would they make of the world today...!? Evening all.

3 stars for all, anyway. Thx. to P.C.'s Plod and Nab too :-)
Hi answerbok! No, the "COPS" I am thinking of is a different one. This is where a cameraman and a microphone-guy (sound man) ride around in a police car with a REAL police officer and film everything that goes on, without any editing or scripting. There are no 'regular' characters. It is a different police officer and a different police department every time. It is indeed American, and although they travel around to different cities to film, they seem to have a predilection for Atlanta, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and cities in Florida. I know this show is aired in Canada too...
