the standing charge was £46 and the actual gas used was £10.27, it was from 14/6 to 23/09, so the standing charge is 4 times more than my actual usage, is that normal?

Ok I've found my last duel fuel bill, it was still in the envelope. it covers 27/03 to 30/04 at the 2 previous rates, 7.24p and 3.64p for gas, then from 01/05 to 13/06 it is 3.64p per unit of gas, so about £66 in total, then they've added the new standing charge that came in 01/05, which is £19.84 for just those 44 days from 01/05.
and so this new quarter with the standing charge and just the lower tariff per unit is £59.08 and the last quarter with only 44 days standing charge and the 2 rates of tariff was £91.63.
Does that sound better than I thought?
Yeah it is normal - you should shop around

key meters are much more expensive and there is only one without a standing charge altho' this ;
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=3438851&page=1
implies there are more

this is how incidentally you get your landlord to pay some of your utility bill ( you go onto a meter system with a standing charge so you pay less per therm and then when you leave - he pays an unnegotiated standing charge during the void period (!) yay good one
and also accounts for modern leases saying - thou shalt not change utility provider

this is just modern living dee-jay

change to one without a standing charge
you are being ripped off and both your provider and you know it

Dot, when you phone them tomorrow tell them your thinking about changing energy suppliers, I bet they come up with a cheaper deal for you.
