I am interested in obtaining a small video cam for mounting on the windscreen of a car e.g. behind the driving mirror. The prices vary enormously from £200 or more to £60 or less. I don't want to pay the earth but at the same time I do not want to buy a cheap one if it is unsatisfactory. Any advice or experiences would be most welcome.

That's expensive. Go on e-bay and find one for about £12.00. Use velcro and stick it to your dash. Get a 4meg micro sd card. Job done. e-bay item number 200910067165 This only one of quite a few. It works very well, got one myself.

Mallyh I bought the HD one 1280*960. Better videos. But yes, these cheapies are as good as the expensive ones.
