I have recently moved house. I have access to a small garden which was very neglected and the grass was very overgrown when I moved in. There appear to me thick, brown, jaggy, course, almost straw like, patches dotted over garden which feels like I'm going over a boulder when I mow the grass. I think they are rushes but I'm not entirely sure. Can anyone advise me on how to get rid of these things?

Sounds like you have possibly, common rush, soft rush or wood rush. these are common where the grass has become neglected or is acidic. I think the best way to get rid of it, is to dig out the clumps or tufts, apply some fresh top soil and sow with grass seed.

You might need to improve your drainage too.
