Lovers Over Friends?

Why is it that when friends hook up with a new boyfriend/girlfriend they drop everything and make that person the centre of their universe? Just because that person has sex with them, they become instantly the person they want to be with all the time, including important days like birthdays, Christmas, New Year etc. Friends have to hang around in the background until they split up (which they usually do). I feel like the 'lovers' have not earned this dedication and worship, and the friends, for their years of love and support, are always left behind. Has this happened to you- either as a friend or the one who loses their brain when a new lover comes on the scene?
