If this chap lives in a council house he will have to pay full rent and council tax if he has more the £16,000 in the bank. The weekly rent and council tax is likely to be more than his entire state pension.

Which is why they keep it under the bed and do not declare it.

How sad - but I think a lot of older people don't use banks. I used to know one elderly man who carried his considerable wealth around with him in plastic carrier bags - and no amount of reasoning would persuade him to change his ways. I tried!

Exactly, hc. I don't think it's that unusual for elderly people, especially, to distrust banks.

good point gromit but it's easy to hide an account from the authorities if that's the reason.

... but, TTT, many older people wouldn't have a clue how to do that (or would feel it was morally wrong to be deceitful).

Despite the fact that my two sisters and I had set up a account for her my mother hated using the bank, so much so that by the time she died she'd managed to squirrel away nearly £6000, a tidy sum thirty years ago. Every draw we opened seemed to have money stashed in it, usually in an envelope with what it was for neatly written on it for example £xx for so and so's birthday, which was nice because it all got to where she wanted it to go

I suspect that one of the reasons why some older people distrust banks and building societies because they would have known people (their own parents for example) who had their savings wiped out during the 30s.

You can't lose money if you have it under your mattress.

(Well, you can...but you know what I mean).
