Ok further to my two previous posts, re Egypt and a week in UK, we have now decided to forego Egypt (and lose our money unless FCO changes their mind) and I want to book a 'cheapish' if possible week in September, due to the above, somewhere like Greece or Canaries, near beach and shops ... mainly English tourists but not lager louts though. Quiet but somewhere we can walk around restaurants and shops in the evening. Adults only? Hope I'm not asking too much .... Thanks for all your advice in the past, can anyone help again? Many thanks.

Consider the North of Tenerife, around santa cruz possibly, all the rowdy resorts are in the South but the area at the 'top' of Tenerife is really interesting but still has beaches and restaurants etc.
There is even a man made beach of yellow Saharan sand if you don't like the grey volcanic stuff.
Gran Canaria was great except we were booked into Playa las ingles and weren't told it was a massively popular destination for gay people and so we felt like the odd ones out, though only for the first couple of days really, had a proper good time and the shows at night were fabulous, mostly drag acts, but very good. the swedes seem to love it there and they are incredibly friendly and polite, some very interesting people, lots to do, the beach was a bit breezy but the sun sets are amazing, the sun goes down in seconds.
My son is still insisting he is going to Herghada in 3 weeks time but the foreign office is still saying it's fine in that part but i'm not convinced.
Turkey, Icmele is tranquil whereas Marmaris is vibrant, active & cosmopolitan

Cyprus is good in September.
Puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria is lovely, we stayed in Mogan Valle apartments which are 10 - 15 mins stroll from the resort centre. It's very picturesque (known as Little Venice) with plenty of restaurants and shops. Not the place to go if you want nightlife etc but ideal for couples wanting a relaxing break.
Morocco fits the bill. Moslem but very laid back. Nor "dry". Cabarets, souks, museums, etc. All sorts of scenery. Not a long flight - you don't even change the time on your watch. And it's outside the EU, so you can buy Duty-Frees.
Try Italy.

Sorrento is beautiful and will still be very warm. There are loads of places to visit, like Capri, Amalfi and Pompeii. Be careful in your choice of hotel...some of the ones that you find in the package holiday brochures are a half hour bus away. Stay in the town centre. Sorrento is not a beach destination though, so if you want to lie on a beach for a week, try Sicily. Very warm in September and like everywhere in Italy, wonderful food !

Also try the volcanic islands off the coast of Sicily, like Lipari...look at this..doesn't it look wonderful !
