Problems With Word

I've borrowed Granddad Grumps laptop to type up some notes and I cannot understand what is happening - If I go back to amend something it automatically highlights the whole word in blue and then deletes it if I try to type over it.

When I try to embolden a heading it won't remain on the B unless I hold down Ctrl or shift key. If I click to start a new sentence it automatically highlights the whole previous paragraph (which it did just then) I'm sure that I have done something really stupid but would like to put it right before gg wakes up

If a word is highlighted and you type it does replace the word that was already there.

Try using the arrow keys to un-highlight it first ?

As for why it does it, I'm not sure. Maybe gg set it up for that ?

Thank you og - He must have done it accidentally as he knows less about computers than I do I don't highlight the word - it just happens if I happen to to click near the word
