A fortnight before the Australian elections, Assange's party has started to disintegrate. Not to worry, though, he lost touch with his party's leaders solely because he was intent on: "Trying to save a young man's life."

CD, What evidence do you have that the American government leant on the British government/police to stop Miranda? Why just assume such pressure was exerted? "Tad cynical" hardly cuts it, in my view, as a reasoned argument.
Bazile - if you're serious and I can't really believe you are - given that Stockholm is about 900 miles north-east of London and the eastern USA about 3,500 miles west, any aircraft that had to divert to the USA for an emergency landing whilst on a flight from Britain to Sweden would have to be manned by a monumentally incompetent aircrew!

You now say, "The US government were given the heads up BEFORE he was detained." Doesn't that make a nonsense of your earlier-stated belief that THEY leaned on US to carry out the detention? You can't hope to use two such conflicting notions to sustain the same point; namely, that the Americans are the baddies!

The US circulates a list of people associated with Sowden whom they feel deserve close scrutiny. Said journalist is on said list. The UK gets to notice that Miranda is on his way to the UK and decides to inform the US of this and its intention to detain him. Doubtless the US gives it's appraisal of the situation and the potentially damaging information he may well have in his possession.
If not, what reason did the UK have for wanting to detain Miranda as his documents were in order?
Doubtless the US would neither confirm nor deny any such list exists but given their displeasure over Sowden it'd be common knowledge among the relevant intelligence communities that such a list has been compiled.
