How does one start finding work as a proof reader, my partner,an IT Software Programmer at the tender 52, is finding little or no luck in the IT industry but drives me potty showing me all the mistakes made in the daily newspaper! Thought I could tell him to put his money where his mouth is!

As your partner is an IT specialist he should have no problem in searching the internet for the names of publishing houses. I suspect you can apply directly to them. I'd imagine it's not as simple as that but it's worth a go.

He could easily switch to being a Technical Writer. This involves lots of proofreading, as well as writing and he can still use his software knowledge (there are lots of jobs for Tech Writers with knowledge of C++, for example). Pretty good money too. It's what I do.

you will likely need some kind of training and qualification in proof reading, as it is not just spelling.

it is grammar, punctuation, font sizing, formatting etc etc etc and there are all sorts of little symbols to learn that need to be used to highlight the mistakes for someone else to actually alter.

it takes ages and you must read every letter, comma, space undividually - it's not like ordinary reading.

or rather individually

there was an extra 'i' in that very word that I removed before posting, and missed the 'U' ! Doh! - see how easy it is to miss something! ...LOL ;oD

Perhaps he could try for a job at a local printers / newspaper office.
They are keen to have people with excellent eye for details.

Search your yellow pages for your local ones.

Good luck
