I need to earn some extra money whilst working from home. I think I would make a good proof reader. When I've Googled the subject, I've come across online courses that are available. Has anyone out there got any experience of firstly, becoming qualified and secondly, getting work? Thank you

I looked in to this some years ago and discovered that the only real demand is for proof readers that have real expertise in specialised subjects such as medicine and science and involves a lot of cross checking that the sources had been properly referenced and the facts are correct. Hopefully you'll get some replies from people that have done the work.

I have done it many years ago - you need experience and it is often a very tedious job.
There are FAR more people who want to be proof readers than there is work available ! You really need to be an expert in a particular specialist subject and proof read articles in that subject !
Would you put an exclamation mark at the end of every sentence if you were a proof reader Eddie?
There should be no space between the last letter and the punctuation!
Given the standard of English grammar everywhere now-a-days, I don't think there's many places employing proof readers. More money in teaching it.

But good luck giving it a bash.

So, i am aware things are wrong the moment I press 'answer now'. I think tech has it in for older users.
Specialist knowledge helps

Can you write well? Often the proof-reader is called on to make changes, keeping the gist of the text, obviously.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer. Maybe it's not the route to go down after all. What about freelance typing? I wonder if that would have the same limitations i.e. too specialist and far more people wanting to do it than the work available?
Well zacs, as I've mentioned many many times already, but apparently still hasn't sunk in, they appear whether I proofread or not. Try reading that through a few times and inwardly digesting it.
