How do they collect statisitics about the number of million viewers who watched each programme such as Eastenders, Coronation Street, Neighbours, etc

All TV ratings are compiled by one company (BARB). A group of viewers (approx. 3000 I think), supposedly a cross section of society, record their viewing habits and these are used to work out total viewing figures.
