MPs steal from their employers on a daily basis .and claim expenses to help them do it ..THEY get away with it,and get a massive pay rise to help them on their way. Lets hope you can get away with one silly mistake??? good luck.

Don't admit to anything until you've had legal advice.

Ideally an admission at the earliest opportunity should be made.

Don't you just love answerbank.

I know who's advice I'd be following.
...it can be if you're stressed and not thinking straight...give him a break!
I think barmaid is trying to.
Thanks daffy, I contravened the rules and am sorry. Anyway answer removed - sorry ed.
If you work on public transport in London the constant threat of more terrorist attacks must weigh heavily on you. That would cause a great deal of stress and lead to uncharacteristic behaviour. Mention that to your lawyer.
Just Jude, I'm not out to frame him but making excuses for him is wrong
I don't understand why you denied it, when you're openly saying on here that you did it.
I think they should lock you up and throw away the key for trying it on.

I agree with boxtops, if your going to be arrested over it they'll probably read all this anyway
Although stealing from employer is regarded as serious, £1000 is relatively small beer so I hope you get a sympathetic hearing and only a suspended prison sentence or community.

The pension situation really depends on the small print in the pension contract, but you certainly shouldn't lose any employee contributions.

If your going to make admissions to the police then do it asap (ring the officer dealing with the case), before they start investigating individual transactions to try and prove their case.

Here are some mitigating circumstances:

Accused admits offence at early stage (which prevented costly and time consuming police investigation). Personal factors such as illness, family difficulties, financial difficulties, etc. Voluntary cessation of offending. Misleading or incomplete advice. Behaviour not fraudulent from the outset, ...and....Voluntary repayments, or an offer to voluntarily make repayments (prior to court hearing **).
You may get both community work and a short suspended. That will achieve two objectives, from the court's point of view. It doesn't put you in jail but it tells the world that such offences get jail, and that you were a special case and everyone else will get jail. That may not be strictly true, but it gets the message out!
From experience (not me, someone close to me though) don;t expect a lenient sentence
The person I know was not expecting to be sent to prison, but he was, for exactly the same thing. Cancelling tickets and pocketing the cash
He was given 10 months - didn't lose his pension though
