knifing a player is a bit worse than just dishing out a red card.
No, I'm not making light of it, just the whole thing is horrendous.

The way you've described it in the question suggests that the ref was attacked simply because he'd disallowed a goal or given an offside or some other decision common in a game of football.

I accidentally saw a video earlier of this ref after they had retrieved all his body parts and taken them to the hospital. He had both arms and both legs severed as well as his head. The video almost made me vomit :-/
