Hi, recently diagnosed type 2 on metformin, 2 tablets, 3 times a day with meals.

I have breakfast at around 0530am,,,bowl of shredded wheat bitesize, skimmed milk and canderel.

We then have a break at 0930....a time when ive tradtionally eaten most of my sarnies.

We then have 1230 dinner time, i don't usually eat anything.

I sometimes have a quick sarnie at 3pm ish when i get in from work

Dinner is usually 7pm.

Doctor has told me to have breakfast as normal
Snack at 0930
Good lunch at 1230
snack at 3pm
dinner at 7.

Now im not sure what low or zero carb food to have at 9.30 and 3pm. Today for 9.30, i had a small tin of mackerel in brine, a zero sugar jelly, some grapes and an apple.
At 3pm, i had 8 seaford sticks and a banana.

Am i doing this right ? The only major carbs ive had was 4 slices of weight watchers danish bread with a slither of marmalade on at 12.30.

Any suggestions what else i can snack on ?

any general tips and advice on diet with type 2...what to avoid, what to eat lots of etc

Many thanks

In a nutshell....eat what you did before being diagnosed only half the amount......e.g don't have second helpings.

Snack on nuts or cheese, preferably nuts.

Avoid fruit juice drinks.......drink water or a glass or whiskey at night.

Don't miss lunch...soup and bread is a good standby.
i normally have a piece of fruit for a snack not grapes though as i believe they are quite high in sugar or a cup a soup if weather is cold .if you have small piece of cheese grate it, it looks more .also i try and limit my bread intake,co- op crackerbread(0.1g sugar and 0.1g fat) is quite nice and you can put different things on it ,tuna ,banana.thin slice meat etc
Maybe instead of fruit-which is quite high in carbs-have hard boiled eggs, cheese portions, cooked chicken thighs or legs, cold meats, tinned fish.

I was diagnosed about 3 yrs ago, have cut out Sugar, have Brown Bread instead of White, no sweets or chocolate, otherwise pretty much as before, including lots of walking, I see Diabetic clinic nurse once a year for blood test, not on any meds at all, I refer to it as Diabetes light at the moment,I think it's a case of being sensible in what you do.
