Noticed this statement used frequently on Chatterbank with specific ref to Shannon Matthews case. Why do people assume that you are scum or of lesser quality because you live in a Council Estate? I know many people and friends who live in Council Estates and they are upstanding members of the community who take a pride in their homes and are very family orientated. Council Estate house are now privately owned and people now have the privilege of owning their homes without getting into debt and buy "fancier" house way beyond their means. So don't "label".. everyone the same. "Scum" is relevant in every walk of life, just look at these so called celebrites, Naomi Campbell. Pete Doherty, Amy Whinehouse,I must stop now or I could go on forever!

Lol....it's been a nice discussion ...I still think that in spite of two world wars ,the emancipation of women ,the integration of our wonderful multicultural society , freedom of speech and acceptance of modern society that the class system is still alive and well and living in a place near you !!
Nite all :))
Burning tyre round the neck anyone? Will you all listen to yourselves. Riots have been started on lesser statements. I'm assuming this started as a result of the Matthews clan. Don't assume everyone is as bad as that in any area. And don't forget that those 'scum' that you are talking about were out day and night in all weather, giving up their time and energy to help the police find that little girl. God forbid my child or grandchild should ever go missing, but if he did, I would like to think my neighbours would rally to the cause the way they did. Council estate, private estate bad seeds are everywhere. There have and always will be the poorer and richer people in our society. Fact. But that does not mean that they are all bad or all good. It's a mixed bag these days. Having lived in so called middle class and so called lower class areas I can honestly say I would prefer the community spirit of the council estate to the snotty, 4wheel drive, false nailed, maldive holidaying 'new chav' in there blonde wood laminate floored house.

Nice to see this discussion is continuing.

Lots of really good view points .

But really need to disagree with anyone who think , People who live in Council estates as....... Unemployed Uneducated Scum.

Simply not True.

Yes people like this who live of state handouts do tend to live in Council houses.....Why ??? Building Societies dont tend to give mortgages to the unemployed with no job prospects.

As i have previously stated I live in a nice area....With a nearly paid off Mortgage. I have Two young kids and I have no Idea what kind of Job they will need to find to buy a house as the wage would need to be in the Mega money Bracket.

They have no Idea as I have ...How life is so different from where they live now to how life can be in a Council housing Estate.

Thanks for all your replies the topic give rise to
many issues which you all contributed to in your
views. my main issue was the fact that "Scum"
was associated with council estates, where I live the majority of housing estates are well looked
after and people take pride in their homes! I do
agree that the Shannon Matthews situation is
a sad portrayal of Council Estates!
You are spot on with that Mary T.
Agreed completely. My husband's family come from a council background and they are the nicest most honest folk you could meet!
