Can't say I've ever heard the phrase "smoothing a cat".
I clap dogs too.
Nope, it's a new one on me.
I would say smoothing or stroking a cat or dog, never heard of "clap" as to stroke or smooth.
My gran used use the term "smooth him down" when stroking an animal and my more local yokel friends still say smooth instead of stroke (north devon)
