Birthday Present HELP

I've been invited to a party towards the end of this month. The only problem is that the person who's (40th) party it is, used to be my teacher at school. We were very good friends while I was at school (used to socialise together out of school hours, etc) but since me leaving school, 13 years ago, the only contact we've had is sending xmas cards with a short update of our lives in them.

This will be a great reunion type thing for us (and loads of faces from my past) as well as celebrating her birthday but I've no idea what to get her as it's so long since I've seen her.

The only thing I know for certain is that she still teaches and still goes skiing. And I assume she still likes cats (not something you go off lol). But I've no idea what to get her.

She's not a poseur-type skier so something (a hat, gloves, etc.) with a "name" on it probably wouldn't have the "impact" it would on someone who likes brands and "names". I'm completely stumped - any ideas????

Is there something "generic" you can buy someone? I don't mind spending up to, say, 40 tops.

It's great that you have asked this question as i have been thinking about a great present to get someone, its a full spice rack! I think this would make a great pressy and i would be happy if someone gave this to me. Hope this helps.

Orchids seem to go down well with most people, you can get some fab colours, so it's lively and funky, something they can keep and grow, but also fairly generic. It's also something that most people don't buy themselves.

Pinkiefriend - that's a great idea - I'll give that serious consideration. Thanx

Orchids are a good idea too but won't they die. Or am I being thick? Can you buy an Orchid plant?

What about a really nice pen? My friend bought me a lovely one which cost about 30 and I think about her every day when I use it.

Its so much nicer than writing with a biro!

I meant an orchid plant, they're about 20-40 depending on the size. I quite like the spice rack idea too tho.
