Although not widely reported the EDL are to carry out a peaceful Downing Street protest, but various Left-Wing groups have said they will also attend, which as past experience has shown will turn the proceedings into a confrontation between the two sides.

Should the other groups join in with the EDL in common support for our soldiers, or failing that shouldn't the EDL be allowed to protest alone, then we could either see their correct colours or see that they are only there for a peaceful protest?

Or wouldn't that be in the best interests of the Left?

Yes Em...they were a terrorist group. The EDL aren't so why are the ashamed to show their faces?
I hope you are not equating the EDL with an illegal terrorist organisation ?

Perhaps an innocent reason for the balaclavas, like trying to avoid sunburn is the explanation. We should give them the benefit of the doubt because they are 'our' idiots.
Perhaps to show support for our troops, they were inspired to enact their own tribute to the events at Balaklava in the Crimean War.

The EDL version would of course be The Charge of the Light Ale Brigade.
perhaps they do so they don't show their employers, that is if they are employed their mugs, they might be booted out if found to belong to this group.
why did many of the rioters of the 2011 debacle cover up, or many anarchists protesting at any event they can throw their weight behind, many of them cover up because they don't want to be seen, known about by the police, security services. The anti fascist people have been known to don scarves, balaclavas, or hoodies.
Em,

First you liken them to the IRA and now to criminal rioters.

They are a Patriotic Protest Group.
no where did i liken the EDL to the IRA, i said they also wore balaclavas.

The Guardian made a lot out of the fact that the EDL had their charity money refused, but it would have also been refused if it had been offered by Labour, Tory or Lib/Dems etc.

/// "It is the same for any political party, we do not allow political fundraising. As a charity, we are non-political." ///

It is amazing how many are still prepared to use this site to sling insults etc at the EDL, when I am prepared to state many do not know a thing about them, except what the politicians and the media have brain washed them into believing.

Personally all I know about the EDL is the fact that they are said to be against the rise of Islam into this country, that I agree with.

They have not personally done me any harm, no more than say any other robust football crowd might do.

They may start out to peacefully protest, but Far-Left parties refuse to let them, and this is were the trouble starts, a few hot heads in both camps cause the trouble.

Now we come to those that many on here are prepared to defend rather than the EDL, I refer to those who have mutilated, murdered and beheaded on our streets, not the EDL, those who have carried out bombings in which many have been killed on buses and tube, not the EDL. and those who are a constant threat to the security of this country, not the EDL.

So how can you *** off the EDL for their minor miss-deeds?

I know who I would rather have as my travelling companions, at least I know that the EDL members wouldn't blow me to pieces.

As regards why they wore balaclavas, not just because they are ashamed of their faces, but because of sheer repulsion shown towards them not only on here, but by their employers and the media, look what happened to those members when the press published their names and addresses.

No they are not allowed to wear balaclavas, but some of a certain faith are allowed to walk freely in society with their faces covered, and look what crimes some have committed taking the advantage of their identity being concealed?

The word that the censor chose blank out with 3 stars was the name one calls a heap of coal dust at a colliery.

The difference is that the Conservatives, LibDems and Labour would not have fund raised, supposedly for Help the Heroes, because they would have known charities have to be politically neutral to gain charity status. There is obviously no one the EDL that is ufficient ly clued up.

Wonder what will happen to the dosh? A new range of Balaclavas perhaps?

The EDL are a Protest Group and have no membership list. You are thinking (maybe) of the BNP who are an entirely different organisation, whose membership was leaked by a member and disgruntled ex-employee.

To get the BNP and EDL is, frankly, inexcusable.

Thanks for that em10, I know that it is their own site but I have to further agree with them after reading most of it.

/// Whilst we must always protect against the unjust assumption that all Muslims are complicit in or somehow responsible for these crimes, we must not be afraid to speak freely about these issues. This is why the EDL will continue to work to protect the inalienable rights of all people to protest against radical Islam’s encroachment into the lives of non-Muslims. ///

I suggest others do the same, and then explain what they have against them, obviously I don't expect some Muslims to agree, because it could be seen to be an attack on their religion.
A fine sentiment of the EDL. In what way is radical Islam encroaching into your life, aog, or into the lives of other non-Muslims ? And how is your inalienable right to object to anything been or being affected?

If that is the EDL's manifesto, it is a party or group without a purpose. It would be like having a manifesto to preserve the right of women to vote or to ensure that Greenwich was on the zero line of longitude. We may deduce that there's more to it than that. What the more is, is simple racism.

[If you cite acts of terrorism by radical Muslims as 'encroachment' that does not fit the word. Moreover the EDL have not protested against other terrorism. And, of course, everyone is against terrorism and so being against it is not a manifesto or basis for any group]
"many do not know a thing about them, except what the politicians and the media have brain washed them into believing".

This coming from someone who sources their "facts" from the Daily Mail.
