I have whatsapp, and wondered if it costs to use it while away, just for texting and sending pics etc. thanks

whatsapp requires your data plan to be switched on in order to function. so unless you can obtain data via a wifi connection, then yes, you will have to pay to enable you to send/receive via whatsapp - although it's the "plan" you pay for rather than whatsapp, per-se.
